Pau Harvest: A Moment to Celebrate and Say Thanks

Pau Harvest: A Moment to Celebrate and Say Thanks

"To all of you – the faces, the families, the coworkers and friends we couldn’t do it without every single one of you. Coffee is what we do, you are who we are and what sets us apart. Thank you and well done.” – Fred Cowell, General Manager

The harvest is pau (finished in Hawaiian) and for just a moment a calm has settled over the orchard. It won’t last long but in this momentary stillness all you can hear in the orchard is the sound of the Kauai trade winds rustling in the leaves, soaring seabirds and winter waves rolling up the south shore. The vibrant coffee cherries that dotted our trees have been stripped from their branches and the constant whir of the harvesters has come to an end for the season. It's a moment to relax and celebrate together.

It is in this moment that we transition from one thing to the next. Always on the go we move from harvest to soil preparation, milling, drying and processing the precious seeds that will stock shelves and fill mugs around the world. This week I had time to reflect on our year and think about all of the things we do at Kauai Coffee. From seed to cup there are hundreds of jobs that are critically important along that timeline. Everything we do to produce exceptional coffee, care for our land and provide for our families couldn’t be done without each one of you.

This year was not a year without challenge. From the wet weather and flooding across the island to going through certification processes that have changed the way we operate, 2018 was a year of transition but I know it will lead to success because of each of you does what you do so well.

I am so proud to be a part of this team that works safely, professionally and cheerfully every day. It is a pleasure to celebrate with you, smile with you and take a moment to remember that our work is about so much more than great coffee. Our work and our coffee is great because of the people who are behind it.

On behalf of our managers, supervisors and partners mahalo, thank you and well done. Coffee is what we do, you are who we are.

Thank you note to Kauai Coffee, staff, family and friends from Fred Cowell, General Manager adapted thank you speech given at the Pau Harvest Celebration December 15, 2018.
