What is the difference between the Estate Reserve bags and the blue/green/purple Premium Gourmet bags?
Each year approximately 5% of Kauai Coffee’s crop is selected to become one of our premier Estate Reserve coffees. These are available at our Visitor Center on Kauai or simply click on the shopping button to take you to our online store.
Premium Gourmet coffees are sold at our Visitor Center and at fine retailers throughout Hawaii. Don’t forget, you may also add a regular, decaffeinated or flavored selection to your online shopping basket after your E-Tour.
Do you offer tours?
Yes, we have a free self guided walking tour that covers who we are and what we do at Kauai Coffee. We also have video tours and a friendly staff who will do their best to answer all your questions.
How long have you been growing coffee?
Formerly McBryde Sugar, Kauai Coffee Company began planting coffee trees in 1987.
Is your coffee a 10% blend like a lot of “Hawaiian Coffees” we see in the stores?
No, at Kauai Coffee we only offer 100% Hawaiian Kauai Coffee. All our coffee is grown, harvested, processed and roasted right here on our Estate. We do not blend our Kauai Coffee with coffee from off-shore origins, in fact our motto is “Never Blended – Always Pure – Guaranteed!”
How many varieties of coffees do you grow?
We have five varieties of Arabica coffee beans: Yellow and Red Catuai (Brazillian seed), Typica (Guatemalan seed), Blue Mountain (Jamaican seed) and Mundo Novo (Central American seed).
What is the difference between Kauai Coffee and Kona Coffee?
Kauai Coffee is generally less acidic with broader flavor profiles than its cousin beans from Kona (a geographical distinction on the Big Island of Hawaii). Also, as products grown on a single estate, Kauai Coffees have a natural consistency that you can count on year after year cup after cup!
What are your agricultural practices?
- Only 16% of our land is used for coffee production; more than half of the land is held in conservation.
- We employ environmentally friendly agricultural practices including total re-use of all processed by-products, water conservation, and no use of insecticides.
- Water used in factory processing is filtered then used to irrigate our fields. The cherry pulp and mulch from pruning are back on the fields as soil amendments.
- We are the largest drip irrigation coffee estate in the world, and use this method to apply water and fertilizers directly to the roots of the trees. Because we are fortunate not to have the disease and insect problems that other coffee-growing origins have, we do not use insecticides.
- We are also fortunate that our company owns two renewable hydroelectric generators on the island. One is located in Kalaheo and the other is in Wainiha Valley. We generate all of our own electricity and even produce about 5% of the electrical power that lights up the island of Kauai.
